GHOST ACCOUNTS - Important Notice

Unread postby Camelot » Tue May 07, 2013 4:40 am

Over the last few months there has been a significant increase in the number of ghost or alias accounts. Some members have as many as 5 accounts running. These duplicate accounts are often used to bump their own posts, or give rep points to themselves. This is not tolerated.
This makes things difficult for the moderators to monitor, though not impossible.

Nevertheless, we would like to know why some of you have multiple accounts. If we are given legitmate reasons for them then we may reconsider the following proposal:
NEW RULE: Only one account is allowed. All duplciate accounts will be deleted.

We would like your opinions. After one week, we will consider decide.
Thank You.

Some were pretty obvious even to us non-moderators (based on their word-choices and general online demeanor). This sounds like a tricky topic because there are those who only use multiple accounts to bump threads or give rep to themselves, but also some use them to dust their tracks in fear of getting discovered. Though curious as to how others think about this, I am more in favor of allowing only one account per user. Multiple accounts give members too many excuses to not take responsibility for their own actions.

Thanks for your response, it will be noted.
As for dusting their tracks....if I had 3 accounts and posted 3 girls and any one of them found them - it would take 2 minutes to work out who was posting.

No takers?! I wonder if folks vote twice on issues.

It is possible for ghost accounts to vote more than once. This is one of the reasons we're not happy about it. It leaves polls open to abuse.

I posted to complain about this some time ago. Glad to see it is now an issue with members and mods. I personally prefer if people just have the one account then you know who to fake for and who not to fake for.

Do not waste your rep powers on me. I have reached the limit of the amount of rep you can get. A thank you will do nicely. Sorry don't do requests.

I'm absolutely fine with not allowing ghost accounts, even if it does sound like a cool Tom Clancy novel.

This is a house keeping issue, it is really up to the mods. They would have to monitor for that, additonally and enforce it. And if allowed 2 accounts, agree to only use one for voting. At least they know where the stakeholders stand on the issue. They got my vote. ART

It's no additional effort. We already monitor ghost accounts. Point being, is that once cleaned out, it is easier to control

One further point. Those of you who have ghost accounts will have to nominate an account to keep. Others will be permanently banned.
So if you have reasons for them that you can justify to the moderators, speak up.

GHOST ACCOUNTS would allow some one to post something covertly not directly linked to that individual, overtly. Eventually it would fall to the Abyss, unknown to everyone but you. We could start an account with this name for everyone to use. I have never posted a request just for this reason, too many of my friends know about my art.

ghost accounts for covering ones tracks? why would one want to cover their tracks unless doing something michevious? Also multiple accounts don't hide the SAME IP addresses, so its not even covering tracks very well.

voting and giving rep points to self, bumping, and faking ones own requests are my top suspected reasons for ghost accounts, all of which are not legit reasons.

I think Art and I were thinking more of covering their tracks from social peers, not so much from the moderators. I bet money that there are guys on here who has flaunted this site to their friends and got them to join. So let's say if I met someone in city X and another in Y, posting both of their facebook photos under one account could quickly bring the attention back to home, as opposed to creating individual accounts for X and Y. Without IP addresses (which I'm sure not many people know of or care about), seems like it will be harder to identify someone with multiple accounts unless they have post enough people from their social circle, classes, or workplace.

Also the fact that they are willing to post pictures of friends and loved ones on here is already mischievous enough. What's keeping them from taking things up another notch?

@Sector, my point exactly...ghost accounts just make it easier to be mischievous, hence it should be discouraged and not allowed, period. Still no one has came up or posted a legit reason for having multiple accounts....except for footluvr who PM's himself. Footuvr, if you are really that lonely, just post a topic saying you are taking private fake requests now, and watch how fast your inbox will fill up... ;-) just kidding of course.

I'm with the majority on this one, one account should be enough.
There are far to many dummy accounts with a handful of posts and even less rep...

That said, I have thought of one unlikely scenario:
- multiple users in the same house (hence sharing a router)
Whilst it would be cool to discover that your Bro, Partner, house-mate etc, also dabbles on FTB it would suck if one of your accounts got deleted
but like I said before, chances of that happening are slim.

i agree with the overall sentiment: ghost accounts aren't really necessary for legitimate requesters (and fakers). i would say that anyone who is overly concerned about being caught owing to multiple images being traced back to them would still have the option of having those images done privately.
one tiny problem may be people who are inadvertly sharing the same IP through a proxy or something. i live in a shitty country where all good sites are banned so have to log on here through a vpn service, i'd hate to get banned because someone logged on with the same service. the chances of it happening are remote but there is a small possibility.
overall i'd say get rid of them though. i think the mods here do a great job and having to monitor multiple accounts would be time better spent faking :)
also thanks for asking the community what it thinks. i notice the comments are overwhelmingly from fakers and take this as an indication that we value this site the most...cutting down on any shenanigans and keeping the site from harm gets my vote :)

generally it's easy to spot instances of overlap, and that's much more of an exception to the rule. It's the ones that are causing trouble with aliases that are causing this discussion to happen.

I also notice (r4g5 comment) that most of the responses so far are from fakers. I would encourage the requesters, especially those who do have ghost accounts to give their reasons. No decision has been taken yet and your views are equally important.

Single accounts - I can't see a reason for having multiple accounts other than to get up to no good.

I like the idea that I can ask for different types of fakes on different accounts. I try to refrain from bumping my posts from other accounts of mine. I have never repped myself. Although sometimes i have repped someone else on a ghost account just because I was out of rep on my original account. That may be abuse, but the rep system I feel is broken to begin with. I just dont like having all my requests under one identity. I see the problems it would cause if people just bumped their own posts, but in the case that only one account where allowed, a majority of my requests would then be private. I just dont like having a bunch of people i know under 1 account. It would suck to be caught asking for fakes obviously, because its a taboo. And I may just be paranoid in preferring the option to have multiple accounts, but I think a user who has multiple accounts and is bumping themselves or repping themselves should get repremanded, but someone who is just having two accounts for the purposes of fulfilling some paranoid fueled fear (such as myself) or any other reason not malicious should be able to keep it. I wouldnt rep my own posts, and wouldnt do anything on one account I wouldnt on the other.

Thanks for contributing rbase.
Unfortunately there is little we can do about the rep but that is a discussion for elsewhere.
I did point out above that posting different girls under different accounts does not hide who the actual poster is. Let me elaborate:
There are 3 girls I fake for myself: If I posted them all here, even under multiple accounts, any one of them could deduce who I am in reality. Therefore personally I cannot see the logic of this.
However, all views will be considered so thank you for your response - hopefully others will contribute to the discussion as you have.

I have a few ghosts just so I can request various people to be faked without making it easy to track me down. If I post highschool friends with one account, college friends with another and favourite celebs with a third, the girls posted won't be able to narrow it down to one guy who went to my school, my college and likes my shows.

Simple as that.

See that thumbs up icon? If you like a faker's pic, then click it - that's the best way to get more fakes.

I won't do all women. Don't be offended if I turn your girl down. I am far more likely to accept a girl if I get nude pics or traded fakes out of the deal.
